Hey everyone, welcome back! Today I'm showing you how to make a stylish, durable braided bag strap from fabric. This is such a fun little DIY project, and the best part is you can customise it completely to match your personal style: different colours, patterns, textures, whatever you love. Let's get into it!
What You'll Need
- 4 strips of fabric, each 2 in x 28 in
- 2 contrasting strips (for a pop of colour in the braid)
- Scissors
- An iron and ironing board
- Sewing machine and thread to match your fabric
Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric Strips
- Fold each fabric strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press the crease firmly.
- Open the strip back up and fold the raw edges in toward the centre crease, then press again.
- Fold the strip in half once more and press. Your finished strip should measure about 1/2 inch wide.
Step 2: Sew the Strips
Sew along the open side of each folded strip using a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Do this for all six strips (four main color strips and two contrasting strips).
Step 3: Choose Your Colors
Select two fabric strips of the same colour, plus one contrasting-colour strip, for each bag strap. This 2-and-1 combo is what gives the braid its nice colour rhythm once it's woven.
Step 4: Join and Braid
- Align the ends of your three strips together and sew across to join them.
- Begin braiding the strips, keeping your tension even as you go.
- Continue braiding until you reach the end of your bag strap, then secure the end by stitching across.
Step 5: Repeat for the Second Strap
Follow the exact same steps to create your second braided bag strap using the remaining fabric strips. And that's it; your braided bag strap is complete!
Customization Ideas
- Play around with different fabric colours, patterns, and textures to make a bag strap that's totally your own.
- Use a serger to finish the raw ends for a more professional, polished look.
- Add a D-ring or a tab at the end for a neater, more finished appearance.
- If you're attaching this to a tote bag, don't worry about the raw ends at all; they'll be hidden inside the folds of your tote bag once it's assembled.
